Despite some powerful attacks Peru could not see off Germany on Saturday
Hong Kong, China August 20, 2011 – Germany outclassed Peru in four sets (25-14, 20-25, 25-19, 25-18) in Hong Kong on Saturday as the final weekend of the 2011 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix preliminary rounds continued.

Peru’s Luren Baylon Francis topped the scorers with 24 points but it was not enough for her side to seal the win. Germany captain Christiane Fürst led Germany with 15 points.

August 5-28

Germany had an impressive start with several good strikes, forcing Peru to call a time out at 4-0. Peru struggled to find their form and rhythm as Germany went ahead at 8-4 at the first TTO. Peru tried to hold Germany back but they shook off the challenge and moved further ahead. With solid defense and powerful strikes, Germany took the second TTO by 16-11, stretched the lead to take the set.

Peru bounced back in the second and had a great start, leading 4-0. Germany tried to fight back and did eventually regain their focus but could not hold back Peru from leading 8-4 at the first TTO and 16-10 at the second TTO. The versatility in attack and determination in defence from Peru allowed them to distance themselves from Germany and draw even at 1-1.

The third set started in a point-to-point battle before the first TTO, Germany regained its attacking power and took the lead at 8-5. Peru failed to break through their opponents’ concrete blocks but tried their best in defence. However they could not resist the intense attack from the Germans as they regained the lead at 2-1.

Peru began the fourth set well but following a German time out the European side fought back. Both teams strived to gain each point with Peru using strong attacks and Germany countering well. However unforced errors allowed Germany to go ahead and despite some late changes, Peru went down in the fourth to lose the match.

On Sunday Peru take on USA and Germany face Italy.
