August 5-28

USA began the first set well, going ahead 4-0 before increasing their lead to 8-1 at the first TTO. Germany was unable to stop the dominance of USA and called a timeout at 10-2. Speedy attacks on the net with concrete blocks helped USA maintain their lead before Logan Tom exerted bullet serves and reinforced her team’s position as they sealed the opening set.

The second set was much tighter with both teams refusing to let the other extend the gap. Germany’s form showed great flexibility which enabled them to regain the rhythm after going behind by two points and they focused on the backline attack to stay away from the American block. Germany called for the first timeout when lagging five points behind at 13-18 but it was not enough as the US wrapped up the set.

Germany began the third set well, taking a 6-0 lead before extending the gap to 8-3 at the first TTO. USA was determined to reverse the situation however and smashed with no mercy to move within two points at the second TTO at 16-14. Germany fought fiercely to stay close to their rivals through an effective combination of spiking and defence. But the US regained control and edged the win 25-23.

On Saturday USA take on Italy while Germany face Peru.
