Brazil notch up win over Italy

Brazil block as they clinch their third win of the weekend in Almaty
Almaty, Kazakhstan, August 14, 2011 – 2011 FIVB World Grand Prix favourites Brazil did not disappoint their supporters as they saw off Italy in four sets (25-23, 24-26, 25-18, 25-18) in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Fans of volleyball were looking forward the final match between the two sides and despite of the powerful and sometimes unexpected Italian attack the Brazilians won the game thanks to their confidence.

Pequeno was the best scorer with 15 points while Steinbrecher added 14 points. Costagrande topped scored for Italy with 14 points.

In the first set the lead changed many times and the game was competitive as expected. Brazil took the lead (6-3) before Italy asked for time out. Thanks to Arrighetti Italy tied the score at eight all. Ortolani was perfect in attack and helped her side take the lead for the first time but Brazil was unstoppable thanks to Steinbrecher as they quickly regained control. Brazil played aggressively after the second TTO and the team’s advantage grew to four points. However the Italian girls quickly cut the margin (21-21). However the fight back was short lived as Brazil took the set.

Anzanello and Costagrande helped Italy take the lead in the second set as they took advantage of the Brazilian mistakes. However the world No.1 edged back to bring the scores level at 10-all. After the second TTO Italy continued to play efficiently and Brazilian coach Ze Roberto decided to call a time out. Caixeta played in attack and cut the margin (19-17). Italy asked for second time out and it helped them to surge to a 22-18 lead before taking the set and bringing the scores level.

At the beginning of the third set Brazil took the lead before Italy called for a time out. The European side’s serve improved thanks to their good service but Brazil kept the advantage going into the First TTO. From there the side dominated, taking the set and regaining the lead 2-1.

After losing two sets Italy showed great ambition to fight back but Brazil did not want to give up their position and thanks to a number of mistakes they took the lead. It was 13-8 for Brazil thanks to perfect play in attack by Menezes. After Arrighetti’s counter attack Brazil took a time out. The scoreboard was 16-12 for Brazil before the second TTO. Castro,Claudino and Pequeno scored points for Brazil as they eventually sealed the win, finishing the weekend on top of Pool F.
