Team profile

Under Italian coach Luca Cristofani, Peru are aiming for a spot at the 2012 London Olympics and a return to the level they achieved in the 1980s when they were among the best teams in the world.

Peru’s journey to London started last year when the team did well in the Pan American Cup and finished second in the Final Four in Mexico.

The Peruvian Volleyball Federation (FPV) was founded on May 12, 1942, with Dr. Marcial Ayaipoma Alvarado its first president.

Peru participated in its first South American competition in Buenos Aires in 1964 under the leadership of Dr. Jose Pezet Miro Quesada, who achieved, among other things, the affiliation of the FPV to the South American Volleyball Confederation (CSV) and the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). Peru made great progress under Quesada and he is considered the patriarch of volleyball in Peru. It was he who recruited the brilliant and well-remembered Japanese coach Akira Kato, who raised the level of the team.

Peru have been South American champions 12 times. They were World Championship silver medallists in 1982 and Olympic silver medallists in 1988.
