Tokyo, August 8, 2007: Comments from the head coaches at the official FIVB press conference at Ariake Colosseum on Wednesday evening.
Jose Roberto Guimaraes (Brazil): We are very happy to be able to come to Japan. We have finished the first stage, which was a very important week for us. I think the next round is more important and we will have to play our best in order to get into the final round. The team is in good condition but there are going to be difficult matches awaiting us.
(On the absence of Jaqueline Carvalho): She cannot play for two months because of a doping problem in the Italian league. She was taking a cellulite medication which included a substance that was prohibited by doping control.
(On the return of Erika Coimbra): She played really well in the Italian league. She is improving day by day and I expect her to contribute to the team and help the team.
Shoichi Yanagimoto (Japan): After the first week the team is becoming united. Their condition is improving and we want to play with a real focus in our game. We are really conscious of the World Cup and the Olympic Games. During the first week I think the team played much better than I had expected, and by using the same players again I want the players to have more experience and improve their skills.
Avital Selinger (Netherlands): The Dutch team came to Japan to try to do better than we did in Italy. I feel the team is on the way up. We had some injuries which are now getting better and it seems that the spirit of the team and condition of the team is improving. This competition is very important for us to do well and gain confidence in order to perform as good as possible during the European Championship and get into the qualification rounds for the Olympics, which is our ultimate goal.
(On Francien Huurman, who is back in the team after being treated for breast cancer last year): Francien's condition you can say is not recovered because I guess it takes five years until they can guarantee or at least make a comment that you have passed the stage of risk for cancer. She is playing, she is doing her best. She can play at the highest level. Her condition is not yet as it used to be but she is working very hard to try to reach her goal and to help the team get to the Olympics. Francien is very important for our team. She is experienced and she is a great fighter. She is one of our leaders and that is very important for our young team to have a leader by example to show the way for everybody what being a top athlete is.
Jeng Fang Fann (Chinese Taipei): Six players have retired since the World Championship last year and we have younger players. It has only been one month since the training camp and the condition of the team is not very good. We did not play very well in Italy last week, but we would like to do our best. Our setter was very important and no one is ready to take her place, but when the new setter improves the team will change. I think team work is also important, and if that works well our results will improve.
