Tokyo braces for Typhoon Nancy |
|
|
Tokyo, July 30, 2007 - There is a tropical storm heading for Japan all the way from the Caribbean– and her name is Typhoon Nancy.
With a hurricane serve, thundering block and lightning spike, Cuba’s Nancy Carrillo has had her rivals running for cover as she has swept through Europe and the Americas this summer, leaving a trail of destruction in her wake. The explosive 21-year-old middle blocker has been named Most Valuable Player of three high-profile international tournaments in recent weeks, making her the most feared opponent in the women’s game today.
Japan, as well as Dominican Republic and Kazakhstan, will soon be feeling the full force of Typhoon Nancy when the preliminary round of the 2007 FIVB World Grand Prix takes place at Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo from Friday to Sunday. Carrillo’s most recent award came in the Brazilians’ back yard of Rio de Janeiro, after Cuba had defeated Brazil 3-2 in the final of the Pan American Games – a regional Olympics -- on July 19.
The gold medal match was played in front of 12,750 spectators at the Maracanazinho Arena and lasted 2 hours 11 minutes before Cuba triumphed 17-15 in the tiebreak. Three weeks earlier there had been a Cuba-Carrillo golden double at the sixth annual Pan American Cup, as Cuba beat an experimental Brazilian team 3-0 in the final at Colima, Mexico, on June 29.
Not only was the 1.90-metre, 74-kg center player selected as MVP, she was also the best attacker and best server of the 12-team intercontinental championship -- a qualifier for the 2008 FIVB World Grand Prix. Earlier in June, Carrillo was named MVP of the prestigious Montreux Volley Masters in Switzerland, even though China beat Cuba 3-0 in the final.
Carrillo was the team’s top scorer with 66 points and the best attacker with a success rate of 59.26 per cent. Any team wanting to beat Cuba must first deal with Typhoon Nancy.
But, like the annual hurricanes that sweep the Caribbean, you know they are coming but there is little you can do to stop this extraordinary force of nature. |
