Cuba and USA qualified for 2008 FIVB World Grand Prix |
|
|
COLIMA, Mexico, June 25, 2007 - Cuba and USA became the first two countries to qualify for the 2008 FIVB World Grand Prix.
Both teams advanced to the semi finals of the Sixth Annual Pan American Cup where the top three teams from NORCECA Confederation and the top side from South America qualify for the following year’s prestigious women event.
Cuba won Pool B by defeating Brazil 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-18) and USA finished unbeaten in five outings in Pool A while rolling past Mexico 25-18, 25-12, 25-11
Cuba (1.317), Brazil (1.160) and Puerto Rico (1.155) finished with 4-1 records and positions were determined by point-ratio system.
Dominican Republic, second in Pool A will meet Puerto Rico and Brazil will face Argentina in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Tuesday will be a rest day.
Nancy Carrillo and Yanelis Santos led Cuba with 13 and 12 points and Cynthia Barboza was the best American scorer with 13 tallies.
Trinidad & Tobago and Uruguay will decide the 11th position and Mexico and Canada will meet for the 9th place on Wednesday before the quarterfinals. On Thursday, Peru and Costa Rica face each other for the seventh place and the losers of quarterfinals will play for the fifth slot in the standings. The matches for bronze and gold medal will be on Friday night. |
