FIVB President announces Ningbo as host of 2007 World Grand Prix final round

Tokyo, 26th October 2006 – FIVB President Ruben Acosta closed his press conference concluding the 30th FIVB World Congress with the news that, only minutes before, the Chinese city of Ningbo had been chosen to host the 2007 World Grand Prix final round.

Summarising the most important resolutions made during the Congress, newly re-elected FIVB President Ruben Acosta spoke of greater financial and disciplinary controls within the organisation, thanks to the setting up of a Disciplinary Committee chaired by Professor Bruno Manzella (Italy) and the appointment of a Financial Controller, Mr Joao Nuno Lopes Ferreira (Portugal).

President Acosta also recalled the significant announcement of the project to build 18 schools in tsunami-hit countries following the FIVB’s pledge of 3 million US dollars of aid. The recognition of the British Volleyball Federation was also considered a major step forward towards planning for the 2012 Olympic Games in London and could see a “Team Great Britain” competing in international events from next year.

With the World Championships in Japan just around the corner, President Acosta was already looking well into the future of the sport. “For this year’s World Championships in Japan, we had a record 174 entrants from national teams. For the next World Championships in 2010 we expect up to 250 entries – and if even more national teams approach us, we would be happy to consider them,” he said. The FIVB President also recalled his long-term objective for the USA to host a World Championship event to spread the public appeal of Volleyball on the North American continent.

As the press conference closed, FIVB President Ruben Acosta announced the breaking news that the city of Ningbo in China had been chosen as the host for the final round of the World Grand Prix in 2007.
