Cuba beat hosts Italy 3-1

Italy’s captain Simona Rinieri-Dennis: “We played better than we did at the last match against Cuba. But we failed to convert the closing points of the sets, which is clearly not good enough against a team as strong as Cuba.”

Cuba’s captain Yumilka Ruiz Luaces: “It was a very interesting match. We were better placed to respond to the changes in the game.”

Italy’s head coach Marco Bonitta: “From a technical point of view, Cuba had as strong a serve as ever and they managed to use their strengths. Any team that wins three sets at this level is very strong. The only possibility we have left to go through to the semi-finals is to beat China tomorrow. I think China is stronger than Italy but we have to enter the court convinced that we can beat them, but it will not be easy.”

Cuba’s head coach Felipe Calderon: “This was a big game for Italy and Cuba. We played as a team and maintained our concentration from start to finish. I am pleased with the victory over such a strong Italian side.”
