Cuba, Brazil and Italy win on
opening day |

Sendai,
Japan, July 13, 2005 - Cuba began slowly but
finished with a flourish to beat China 3-2
in an incredible come-from-behind win, while
Brazil and Italy recorded straight-set
victories on the opening day of the World
Grand Prix finals on Wednesday. Brazil, the
defending World Grand Prix champions, had
too much experience for the Netherlands,
while world champions Italy blew away a
hesitant Japan team in front of a capacity
crowd at Sendai City Gymnasium.

Cuba were in outstanding form in the opening match of
the 2005 World Grand Prix Final Round in Sendai, Japan,
coming from two sets down to beat Olympic champions and
world number one China in an epic five-set thriller 3-2
(10-25, 20-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-13) on Wednesday. The
winner of the six-day Final Round round-robin series
will walk away with the 2005 World Grand Prix title.

Japan, July 13, 2005 - Defending champions
Brazil made the perfect start to the 2005 World Grand Prix Final
Round in Sendai, Japan, by beating the Netherlands in straight sets
(25-22, 25-22, 25-14) in just over an hour in the second match on
Wednesday. It was the second time Brazil had beaten the world number
14 after winning their Preliminary Round contest 3-1 (25-27, 25-19,
25-21, 25-17).

Italy breezed past hosts Japan in straight
sets (25-12, 25-21, 25-14) to join Brazil and Cuba as
the first day winners at the 2005 World Grand Prix Final Round in Sendai, Japan.
The home side had a packed stadium behind them but
couldn't convert that support into any pressure on last
year's silver medallists. The winner of the
six-day Final Round round-robin series will
walk away with the 2005 World Grand Prix
title.
