Player's Profile

Manon Nummerdor-Flier

A towering presence for the Netherlands

“I will be only 28 when the Games will be held in London, so in 2012 I can be there too.’’

Flier is already in her fourth year as a member of the Dutch team but this summer is different to the other three. Now she has finally cemented a place in the starting six and she doesn’t want to loose it. “In previous years I was only playing occasionally, but with the appearance of Avital Selinger my place became more permanent. It started last year when we were playing well during the qualification tournament for the World Grand Prix and now I am nearly always in the team and I’m not complaining about it.’’

She is strong and tall at 1.91m and she uses her height and power to great effect at the net and from the backcourt. “But I am not only hitting the high balls,’’ she wants to add. “Avital likes to play a quick game and that has something to do with his history as a coach in Japan. He added some typical Asian influence in our game and that means that we are trying to attack quickly. I have also learnt to hit quick balls or even run different patterns in order to avoid the block of our opponents.’’

“I am quite satisfied with the level of our game during this edition of the World Grand Prix and hope we will reach the finals in Japan. That is what we are focused on right now.’’

But for the long term it is even more important for Flier to reach the Olympic Games and do well in Peking. In order to do that she will return to Holland after the summer to play for the club HCCnet/Martinus, where one will find many national team players and Selinger.

Flier played in Italy last year and had opportunities too stay there. But the ambitions of the national team made here decide to return home. “I can learn a lot from Avital. That is my main reason for going back to play in Holland after this summer.’’

 Eleonora Lo Bianco
A revamped Italian squad could mean a big change in the career of Italy’s exciting setter Eleonora Lo Bianco. One of three players born in 1979, Lo Bianco is the fourth oldest player in the Italian squad at 25 but with the oldest player at 28, Lo Bianco is preparing to take hold of the reigns of the team in more ways than one.
