Special honour for Italy
Hong
Kong, China July 12, 2005 – World champions Italy not
only had the privilege of winning the Hong Kong leg of
the 2005 World Grand Prix Preliminary Round last weekend,
which included a memorable victory of Olympic champions
China, but they also had the honour of receiving their
winner’s medals and cup from the International Olympic
Committee’s (IOC) President Jacques Rogge.
It was a brilliant performance from the Italians, who
needed three victories from the group to ensure they
reached the final round, and they duly delivered with
victories over the Dominican Republic and Germany. China
finished second in the group, followed by the Dominican
Republic and Germany.
President Rogge had recently completed the IOC’s 117th
Session in Singapore, which featured London being
elected as the Host City for the 2012 Olympics and was a
guest of honour of the Hong Kong Volleyball Association
on Sunday.
