Netherlands beat Italy in fantastic five-set showdown

The Netherlands turned on sparks of brilliance and stamina to outlast the hosts of the World Grand Prix Italy in five fantastic sets in a white hot atmosphere in the Palazzo dello Sport in Gioia del Colle to keep their unbeaten record in Pool A.

It was a great result for the Netherlands after coming out on top in a match that was full of emotion and crucial calls with the lead see-sawing frequently they overcame the World Champion Italian side with a great seven point margin in the tie break.

The Italian girls were convincing in the first and fourth sets, in which their blocks and defense worked very well but in the crucial times and especially in the tie-break Italy struck problems with their reception, which a very ready Netherlands took advantage of, especially Leferink and Visser, two of the most experienced campaigners, as their personal scores show.

In the Italian lineup, the youngster Florin pulled out some superb plays but it was all too infrequent for Italy's liking, while the libero Cardullo made some great defensive innovations, in front of some very passionate fans in Gioia del Colle.
