RUSSIA DEFEATS BRAZIL, 25-21, 25-15, 25-21
Russia, banking on the brilliant performances of Evguenia Artamonova, Elizaveta Tishtchenko and Ekaterina Gamonova, scored a 25-21, 25-15, 25-21 victory over Brazil.
Luciana Nascimento and Welissa Gonzaga delivered solid spikes to give Brazil an 11-6 lead but Russia fought behind Artamonova and Gamonova to grab the lead at 19-17 before coasting to a 25-21 win.
The Russians kept their momentum in the second set, posting a 22-12 advantage behind Artamonova, Tishtchenko and Anastacia Belikova en route to a 25-15 victory.
Russia took a 14-8 lead in the third set before Brazil rallied behind the overpowering blocks of Paula Pequeno, Marina Daloca and Karin Rodrigues to close the gap at 19-22.
But the Russians tightened its defense to wrap up the match in one hour, 19 minutes.
Artamonova led Russia with 14 points, 10 on attacks and four on blocks. Gamonova also had 14 points, five on blocks while Tishtchenko had nine attacks.
Nascimento scored 10 points, nine on attacks while Pequeno also had 10 points, three on blocks. Gonzaga had eight points, seven on attacks.
