Brazil edge Germany 3-1 in Nagano

Sheila Castro contributed 14 points to the victory of Brazil over Germany on Sunday

Nagano, Japan, November 6, 2011 – Brazil edged Germany 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21) in a two-hour thriller at White Ring Nagano in the FIVB World Cup on Sunday.

Fabiana Claudino picked up the Most Impressive Player award but it was a solid team performance from Brazil, as it was from Germany. Fabiana had 16 points, while teammate Thaisa Menezes scored 18. Sheila Castro and Mari Steinbrecher added 14 and 12 points respectively.

Germany’s top scorer was Maren Brinker with 18 points, while Angelina Grun had 15. Margareta Kozuch and Corina Ssuschke-Voigt finished with 12 apiece.

Brazil outblocked Germany 11-6 and Germany edged in service points 5-4.

Brazil pulled away from 4-4 to 8-4 thanks to a couple of German errors, a great block by Paula Pequeno and a neatly placed tipover by the same player. After failing to get back the next two serves by Thaisa Menezes, Germany coach Giovanni Guidetti called a timeout and his team pulled back to 10-7. But he called his players off court again when big hits by Paula and Fabiana Claudino put Brazil six points in front at 13-7. Germany came back strongly from that on the back of a Brazil net error and monster hits from Margareta Kozuch and Angelina Grun, prompting Brazil coach Ze Roberto to haul his players off court while ahead 13-11. A great block by Christiane Furst on Fabiana drew the scores level at 14 and Germany were two points up at the second technical timeout after Brazil failed to handle a Kathleen Weiss serve. Both teams were sending down missiles as Germany tried to hold on to the lead. They led from 15-14 to 21-20 when Fernanda Rodrigues sent a great shot down the line. Brazil went ahead from a mis-set by the normally reliable Weiss and they stayed ahead to the end of the set thanks to an errant blast by Grun and two great blocks by Fabiana.

Kozuch kick-started Germany with three rockets at the beginning of the second set before Brazil fought back. But two Brazil errors and a pair of tipovers from Maren Brinker saw Germany two points ahead at the first TTO. After a long shot by Sheilla Castro and a block by Furst on Menezes, Ze Roberto called a timeout with the score at 13-8. His fortunes didn’t improve when Rodrigues was carried off with an ankle injury after Furst had put Germany 15-10 up, but it was Germany who went off the boil. Guidetti called a timeout after a Kozuch blast went wide, allowing Brazil to pull to within two points at 16-14, and Ze Roberto did likewise when Germany pulled away to 20-16. A brilliantly disguised tipover by Grun put Germany 22-19 ahead, but when a Kozuch blast went long, Brazil were only a point back at 22-21. Kills by Kozuch and Furst countered a long serve by Grun and a shot by Fabiana that saw Brazil a point back again at 24-23. But Corina Ssuschke-Voigt drew the two teams level with a powerful drive down the middle.

Brazil took a 2-0 lead in the third set, but from 2-1 to 11-10 there was never more than a point in it. Germany attacked strongly, but errors crept into their game, allowing Brazil to inch ahead and take a three-point lead at the second TTO. But three successive points by Grun made the scores level at 17 and Germany were back in the game. Ze Roberto called a timeout. Weiss served long and Menezes blocked Grun. Guidetti called a timeout. Menezes blocked Furst and then Kozuch, and Brazil were four points ahead at 21-17. But a Brinker spike, a Ssuschke-Voigt block and a Marianne Steinbrecher receiving error narrowed the gap to one and Brazil called a timeout. The teams were level at 22 before a long hit by Brinker handed Brazil two setpoints. Germany saved one but failed to deal with Brazil’s next attack and the South Americans were 2-1 up.

Once again, there was little between the two teams at the start of the fourth set, but Brazil pulled away after the first TTO, moving from 8-6 to 11-7 and maintaining that advantage to the second TTO with Germany never getting closer than two points. After Fabiana blocked Grun to make the score 19-15, Guidetti called a timeout. Ze Roberto did the same two dropped points later. Germany pulled to within one when Brazil failed to deal with a serve by Brinker, but Guidetti had his players off the court again two points later. Brazil held on and a spike by Steinbrecher brought up matchpoint. A long serve by Danielle Lins made the score 24-21, but Grun sent her serve long and ended the match.
