Team profile
Brazil have achieved a lot since José Roberto Guimarães started as coach in 2003. In his first year, the team won South American Championship gold and silver at the FIVB World Cup. The following season, Brazil won the FIVB World Grand Prix and placed fourth at the Athens Olympics. In 2005, they won the Montreux Volley Masters, the FIVB World Grand Prix, the South American Championship and the FIVB Grand Champions Cup.
They had an exceptional year in 2008, clinching their first Olympic gold medal in Beijing and seventh FIVB World Grand Prix title. They maintained this form in 2009 despite a number of changes in the squad, winning the Montreux Volley Masters, the Pan American Cup, the FIVB World Grand Prix, the Final Four tournament and the South American Championship.
In 2010, silver medals at the FIVB World Grand Prix and FIVB World Championship had the world No. 1 hungry to return to the top of the podium. Despite a silver at the FIVB World Grand Prix this year they still managed gold at the Pan American Cup, South American Championship and Pan American Games, where key wing spiker Jaqueline Carvalho suffered a nasty head injury. Despite this unsettling news, Brazil still start as one of the favourites.
Coach profile
José Roberto “Ze Roberto†Guimarães twice won the South American Championship and finished seventh at the 1976 Montreal Olympics as a player. He started coaching Eletropaulo’s women’s team in 1988 and was soon an assistant on the men’s national team which won gold at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He has coached the Brazil women since 2003. His great tactical mind has led Brazil to success after success, culminating in the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics for which he was named Coach of the Year in Brazil.
