Team profile
Algeria have recently emerged as one of the best teams in Africa, with some fantastic success over the last few years allied to an attractive and modern style of play. The Algerian team has come together after more than nine years of work and development, with most players coming from the cities of Bejaia and Chlef where a lot was done during the 1990s to identify players.
Most of these players started their international careers in 2000 at the Girls' African Championship where they surprised everyone with their talent and won the title. A year later the same girls won the junior title, beating everyone in straight sets, before playing in two world age-group championships. For Algeria’s sake, consistency and experience are the key words whilst further growth on the development done within the team is equally important.
Some of the players are now playing in professional leagues in Europe, which is helping develop their skills further. This was underlined after they clinched silver at the African Championships and gold at the All Africa Games in 2011 while at the FIVB Women’s World Championship 2010 in Japan, they performed admirably despite not winning a set. Their tenaciousness on court and wonderful team spirit bode well for a very exciting and promising future.
Coach profile
Ahmed Boukacem was named coach of the Algeria women’s team in February 2011 and has big shoes to fill having replaced Mouloud Ikheddji. He began in disappointing fashion as he watched his side go down to Kazakhstan in a qualifying series for a place in the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix 2011. However, a positive display at the 2011 African Championship, where Algeria finished second to Kenya, means Boukacem, who coaches Algerian club side Groupement Sportif Petroliers, travels to Japan optimistic that his side can perform well.
