Russia win World Cup by beating Poland in final match


Russia celebrate after notching a provisional 2:1 over Poland and thereby also the World Cup title in Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan, December 4, 2011 - Russia captured 2011 FIVB Men's World Cup title and beat Poland in five sets (25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 17-25, 17-15) on the final day of fourth-round action at Yoyogi National Gym on Sunday. The Russians scored eight of the final nine points in the fifth set to notch the victory. By virtue of the scoring rules in place for the tournament, Russia only needed to win two sets to capture the championship. The match turned late in the second set when Poland star Zbigniew Bartman suffered a leg injury. He scored 11 points before getting hurt. Russia ended the World Cup with an impressive 10-1 record, while Poland finished 9-2. Denis Biriukov led Russia with 13 points. Dmitriy Muserskiy added 12 and was named the most impressive player of the match.

A spike by Bartman staked Poland to a 5-3 lead in the opening set. Khtey's spike saw Russia score three straight points for 6-5. A block by Marcin Mozdzonek put Poland up 8-7 at the first TTO. Bartman's spike evened the score at 11-11. Kurek's then put Poland ahead 12-11 with a spike. A spike by Khtey was long and Poland led 15-14. The Poles were on top 16-15 at the second TTO on a spike by Bartman. A serve by Nikolay Apalikov went long and Poland led 18-15. Another Bartman spike made it 20-18. Russia equalized 20-20 on a spike by Biriukov and then went ahead on a block by him. Biriukov's spike made it 23-22 for Russia. Russia gained a set point at 24-22 on a tap by Khtey and Poland called a timeout.. Khtey's spike went out for 24-23 and Russia took a timeout. Russia claimed the set 25-23 on a block of a Bartman spike. Biriukov had seven points in the set, while Bartman had six.

Kurek's spike gave Poland a 5-3 lead in the second set. A service ace by Lukasz Zygadio made it 7-4 for Poland. Kurek spiked again to put Poland up 8-4 at the first TTO. Khtey's spike ended an extended rally and moved Russia within 8-6. Alexander Butko's service ace tied it 8-8. Russia moved ahead 9-8 on a spike by Khtey and Poland called a timeout. Poland reclaimed the lead 10-9 on a Bartman spike. A return error by Russia gave Poland a 14-11 margin. Pawel Zagumny's block made it 15-11. A service error by Russia made it 16-13 for Poland at the second TTO. Mozdzonek's spike took it to 18-15. Bartman's spike gave Poland a four-point lead at 20-16. Another Bartman blast made it 22-19. Russia pulled within one at 22-21 on a block of a Bartman spike. Piotr Nowakowski followed with a spike for 23-21. Volkov kept the pressure on with a spike, but then Kurek struck with a spike for set point at 24-22. Khtey's spike made it 24-23 and then Poland took the set 25-23 when Volkov served into the net.

Nowakowski's spike moved Poland out to a 5-2 lead in the third set. Russia ran off three straight points and evened it 5-5 on a spike by Biriukov. Russia went ahead 7-6 when a Kurek spike went long and was up 8-6 at the first TTO. A service error by Kurek made it 10-8 for Russia. A return mistake by Winiarski moved it to 13-10 for Russia. Jakub Jarosz's serve went long and the count went to 15-12. Nowakowski's serve into the net pushed Russia ahead 16-13 at the second TTO. Russia made it 20-16 on a spike by Mikhaylov. Another Mikhaylov spike made it 22-17 as Russia closed in on securing the set and the World Cup title. A dink by Mikhaylov made it 23-18. Kurek spiked for 23-19. Biriukov's spike gave Russia set point at 24-19. Two spikes by Jarosz spike made it 24-21. Birukov sent a spike long for 24-22 and Russia took a timeout. Russia then clinched the title 25-22 on a spike by Volkov.

A spike by Jarosz saw Poland take a 5-4 lead in the fourth set. Poland was up 7-6 despite a Muserskiy spike and led 8-7 at the first TTO on a spike by Jarosz. Patryk Czarnowski's spike took it to 10-6 for Poland and Jarosz followed with a powerful service ace. Two more service aces by Jarosz made it 13-6. A Kurek tap put Poland up 16-9 at the second TTO. Pavel Kruglov spiked and Russia trailed 17-10. A service ace by Apalikov made it 19-12. Kurek hammered a spike and Poland led 21-13. Muserskiy's spike took it to 22-15. Ruciak's spike sealed the second set 25-17 for Poland.

Apalikov's block put Russia up 4-3 in the final set. Ruciak's spike made it 8-6 for Poland at the TTO. A block by Kurek made it 11-8 for Poland. A dink by Mozdzonek gave Poland match point at 14-9. Apalikov's spike made it 14-12 as Russia tried to hang on with three straight points. Apalikov then blocked for 14-13 and Poland took a timeout. Russia then tied it 14-14on a tip at the net, but followed with a service error for 15-14. Kurek then served into the net to make it 15-15. A dink by Muserskiy gave Russia match point at 16-15. Russia won when Kurek sent a return into the net.
