Kenya's President Mwai Kibaki rewards National Women Volleyball Team

Kenyan players celebrate their victory in the African Nations Championship.
Nairobi, Monday October 15 - Kenyan national women volleyball team received a major boost ahead of next month's World Cup in Japan when the country's head of state, His Excellency President Mwai Kibaki rewarded the team with KShs 1million (US$ 15,000) for winning the African Cup of Nations - Women which was staged in Nairobi last month.
By winning the African Cup of Nations - Women after beating North African rivals Algeria in the finals, Kenya managed to clinch the only World Cup slot reserved for the African continent in the women category while Egyptian men national team bagged the slot for men during the African Cup of Nations held in Durban, South Africa with the second continental team, Tunisia.
While commending the national women volleyball team for carrying the country's flag high over the years, President Kibaki who also rewarded athletes who won medals at the IAAF World Championships in Japan and African Junior Championships in Benin assured the sports fraternity in Kenya of the government's support.
"Our sportsmen and women have been very good Ambassadors. They have done Kenya proud and that is why the government has decided to introduce cash initiatives for medal winners at both continental and international events," the President said.
He also commended Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) National Executive led by Waithaka Kioni as Chairman for doing a good job which has seen volleyball as a sport spread in Kenya right from primary schools through to the universities.
The head of state challenged the national women volleyball team to remain focused during their training and register positive results during the World Cup which will be staged in Japan next month. The team also participated at the last World Championships which was also held in Japan.
"The volleyball family in Kenya is very grateful to the government for the support sports ministry has been giving our teams whenever we are faced with assignments and we would like to assure the President that as a federation we shall take this sport to greater heights," said Kioni.
Kioni who is a highly respected long serving sports administrator in Kenya pointed out that after presenting the national women volleyball team with the Head of State Commendation award a while ago it is very encouraging to see the head of state reward the team with cash which has boosted their morale ahead of the World Cup.
The KVF boss also welcomed to Kenya delegates from CAVB member countries who will be coming to Nairobi to attend the coming CAVB Congress which will also be graced by the Egyptian born CAVB President Dr. Amr Elwani.
The occasion in Eldoret was also attended by top sports officials in Kenya led by sports minister Maina Kamanda who was the chief guest during the finals of the African Cup of Nations - Women. Others were Kenya National Sports Council Chairman Joshua Okuthe, Commissioner for Sports Gordon Oluoch and Athletics Kenya Chairman Isiah Kiplagat.
