Kenyan Women National team start training for the World Cup

Kenya players with the African Cup
Nairobi, Kenya, 6th October 2007 - It was race against time as Kenyan national women Volleyball team assembled for residential training at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani to prepare for this year’s World Cup set for Japan next month.
The team which won the only women slot for the continent after beating Algeria during the qualifications held at the same venue last month was in an upbeat mood as they reported for training under head coach Sammy Kirongo, assistant coaches David Lung’aho, Abdul Muge and statistician Sammy Mulinge.
Speaking at the team’s camp, Kirongo said he has opted to retain all the players who did duty during the qualification tournament and included only a few new faces in the team.
“Presently I have only 15 players in the team since I want full concentration and the final 12 will be named just before we jet out for the World Championships,” said coach Kirongo.
However the coach warned that it will not be automatic selection in the final team for those who did duty during the qualifiers as the exercise will be conducted on merit and every player has to fight for a jersey in the final 12.
Led by team captain Dorcas Ndasaba who recently rescinded her earlier decision to go into retirement, the players vowed to improve on their past performance on the international scene when they go for the World Cup.
“The going has not been smooth for us in our past appearance at the Olympic Games, World Championships and the World Cup but this time round we have to stamp a back and tell the rest of the world that we have arrived,” said Ndasaba.
Kenya Volleyball Federation President Waithaka Kioni pointed out that the team has all the support from the government and the federation and nothing should stop them from producing positive results at the World Cup.
“This team is composed of experienced players who have been to the Olympic Games, World Championships and the World Cup as such we have high expectations on the players and coaches when they go for the World Cup,” said Kioni.
While thanking Kenyan Sports Minister Maina Kamanda for the support the government has given the team through his ministry, the KVF President appealed to corporate sponsors to emulate Kenya Breweries who have been supporting the team through its Malta Guinness brand.
“With more support coming our way we intend to take the team for training abroad and that is why I am sending out an appeal to corporate companies and individuals to come forward and support this team as it prepares for the World Cup,” Kioni said.
