Aussie coach names his podium picks

Australia’s head coach, Russell Borgeaud
Tokyo, Japan, November 29, 2007 - Who will fill the three vacancies for the Beijing Olympics? Who will win the World Cup?

These are the questions about to be answered as the 12 teams prepare for the fourth and final phase of the international volleyball roadshow around Japan, starting Friday.

At the team hotel in downtown Shinjuku on Thursday, Australia’s head coach, Russell Borgeaud, was asked his opinion of the final placings. After all, he is in a perfect position to assess the teams, having met all the leading contenders in the previous eight rounds.

This is what he said: “Before the tournament I did an interview back home and my guess was Brazil and Russia and USA.

“But USA are probably in a tough spot right now so I would probably at this moment change to Bulgaria with Russia and Brazil.

“As to who will win the World Cup, that is a tough one. I think going historically I would have to go with Brazil, but Russia seem to be on the improvement. This is a tough few games for them.”

When asked what made the difference between the best and the rest at this high level, Borgeaud borrowed a line from the Volleyball Hall of Fame inductee Julio Velasco.

“I think in Volleyball it is always consistency in every area, and as well -- as Velasco said a few years ago -- you need two or three exceptional players, like the best players in the world, to be at that level.

“On top of that you need the teamwork and consistency in every area if you want to be with the very best teams.”
