After the Turkish Volleyball
Federation was founded in 1958, the
first national league and the first
women’s national team was formed,
competing in many international
tournaments and regional championships
- the Balkan Volleyball Championships,
the Mediterranean Games - for 45 years.
In 1963 the Turkish women's team
competed in the European Volleyball
Championship for the first time
finishing 10th before recording two
12th-place finishes and two 11th-place
finishes in 1967, 1981, 1989 and 1995
respectively.
In 2003, however, the form book was
thrown out the window as Turkey
finished runners up to Poland to
record a sensational result on their
home turf to book their first ever
trip to the Women's World Cup.
Ranked 44th before their incredible
European Championship performance,
Turkey now head to Japan 15th in the
world and on track to cause any number
of upsets.
