Egypt is considered the pioneer of women’s Volleyball in Africa as in 1960 it was the first country from the continent to register a women’s team. The Egyptian Women’s League was the first in Africa in 1962-1963 and at that time two major clubs were competing for the title, Al-Ahly and Gezera. In 1970 a third club, Zamalek entered the competition to win most of the league titles in the seventies. In the following years Al-Ahly swept all the titles up to and including 2003.

The international activity of Egyptian Volleyball started in 1970 when the first women's national team was established and the first title came six years later when Egypt won the first African Nations Championship in the Egyptian city of Port Said in 1976.

Egypt won four African Nations Championship in 76, 89, 95 and 2003 and three Arab Nations Championships in 82, 88 and 95. The Egyptian women’s team also won the gold medal in the All Africa Games in Kenya 1987 and the All Arab Games in 1992, 97 and 99.

The Egyptian clubs also achieved victories in many continental and regional competitions especially the Al-Ahly club, which claimed 10 African and four Arab Club Championships.

The quality of Egypt’s international teams has improved substantially in recent years as they qualified for the World Championship in China 1990 (finishing 16th) and Germany in 2002 where they finished 21st, as well as the World Cup in 1995 and 2003.
