FIVB Women's World Championship Japan 2006
Competition formula
The 2006 FIVB Women’s World Championship will consist of a total of 104 matches.

First Round  60 matches, 5 days and 4 cities from 31 October – 5 November

The 24 teams are split into four pools (A, B, C and D) of six teams. A single round robin format is played to determine the ranking in each pool. The four best ranked teams of each pool will qualify for the second round. The fifth and sixth ranked teams (a total of eight teams) are eliminated from the World Championship.

Second Round  32 matches, 4 days and 2 cities from 8-12 November

The remaining 16 teams are split into two pools (E and F) of eight teams. Pool E will comprise the best four teams from Pool A and Pool D, whereas Pool F will comprise the best four teams from Pool B and Pool C.

A further single round robin tournament will be played to determine the ranking of each pool. The results and the points of the matches between the same teams that were already played during the First Round shall be taken into account for this stage. The 7th and 8th ranked teams of pools E and F (total of four teams) are eliminated from the World Championship.

The remaining twelve teams will advance to the semi-finals.
