USA extends winning streak to eight matches
The German team gave their farewell appearance at the World Championship with a respectable performance, although the host team lost 3-0 to the USA in the "erdgas arena" of Riesa. The US team is still undefeated and as winner of second round pool G qualified for the quarterfinals.
Germany starts very well taking a 4-0 lead by two aces from Angelina Gruen. But the US players got back and shortened the gap to 6-7. Keba Phipps showed several good actions taking the lead 12-10 for the USA. Germany fought back and scored once and again by top scorer Gruen. The set was very tight at the end, Germany warded off three set points, but could not prevent the fourth one. Phipps blocked Gruen to win the set 28-26.
Both teams continued to show a good level match, but the USA hasdadvantages at the net. Particularly Danielle Scott, Heather Bown and Keba Phipps caused the German block great problems. The German team tried to counter with their best players, Angelina Gruen, Sylvia Roll and Birgit Thumm, but even they couldn't prevent losing the second set 25-20.
The German team had no good start in the third set. At the first technical time-out the USA are 8-4 in front. Olessya Kulakova contributes some points, the German team could not endanger the USA who took a 16-11 lead at the second technical time-out. But then the host team showed good fighting spirit and scored six consecutive points. Logan Tom once again got her team in front with 21-17. But even when Germany was 24-20 down, the Germans did't give up. They equalise again and killed five US match points. Atika Bouagaa finally gave USA the victory by hitting the ball out.
USA will now meet Cuba in the quarterfinals, while the role of the German team has been reduced to the role of spectator.
Prikeba Phipps was with 15 points the best scorer of the match.
