Italy takes pool victory after easy win over Bulgaria
Italy defeated Bulgaria in straight sets and took the Pool A victory. The performance of the teams showed clearly that both teams had already qualified for the second round. After the first set, Italy was definitely number one and Bulgaria number two in this group. That was the sign for both coaches to give their first six some rest. Italy ontinued to dominate and was never in danger in the match.
Italy took over the lead early in the first set and extended it consistently. The Bulgarians only seldom blocked the Italian attacks making it easy for the Italians to win the set 25-18.
In the second set good attacking combinations alternated with small mistakes on both sides. Italy was always in the lead, although the "Squadra Azzurra" no longer played with the starting six. Bulgaria also kept star attacker Antonina Zetova on the bench. After leading 20-15. the Italians went on to win the set clearly with 25-16.
As in the first two sets, Italy was always in the lead in the third set. The Bulgarians pulled themselves together one more time and achieved draws at 13-13 and 17-17. Italy was forced to use a higher gear and clinched the match at their second match point 25-19.
Italian Darina Mifkova was the best scorer of the match with 13 points.
