Russia runs too quick for Argentine panthers
Russia grabbed a place in the second round of the 2002 Women's World Championship by overpowering Argentina in the Pool C clash.
Both teams started the first set quite nervously. In well-balanced rallies, the blocks of Russia dominated. However, Russia led with 8-7 at the first technical time-out and with improved attacking skills the Russians managed to keep Argentina under pressure. The tall Russian attackers hit the ball over the Argentine block and lead 16-12 at the second technical time-out. Towards the end of the set Russia knew to further extend the lead and clearly won 25-16.
Russia rushed off (4-0) in the second set and led 8-2 at the first technical time-out. The crowds created a great atmosphere at "erdgas arena". Both teams were fanatically cheered by the more than 1,000 spectators. Incessantly Ekaterina Gamova, with 2.05 m tallest player at the World Championship, hit ball for ball behind Argentina's block. At the second technical time-out Russia led 16-7 and took the second set a few minutes with 25-10.
Again Russia had the better start in the third set (4-2) and led clearly 8-3 at the first technical time-out. A superior Russian team in all aspects of the game was running to quick for the Argentine Panthers. Russia took their lead at the technical time-out (16-10) and won the third set with 25:18.
Now Argentina is defeated for the third time, Russia, USA and Puerto Rico are qualified for the second round now, while Argentina has to leave the event after Tuesday's match against Dominican Republic.
Ekaterina Gamova was the best scorer with 17 points. Carolina Costragrande took over the first place in the tournament best scorers list. Her 13 points against Russia brought her total to 75.
