Surprising win for Puerto Rico
The first set started out with the teams evenly matched. Good defense on both sides made for long attractive rallies. Puerto Rico led 8-6 at the first technical time out. Strong blocking helped Puerto Rico to increase their lead and go ahead 16-11 at the second technical time out. Puerto Rico continued to pressure and Dominican Republic never found their rythym. Puerto Rico took the first set 25-19.
The Dominican Republic started off the second set stronger with solid blocking and more effective attacking. They led 8-5 at the first technical time out With the score 15-13 for the Dominican Republic, Cosiri Rodriguez Andina from the Domincan Republic went down at the net with an ankle injury and was replaced by Francisca Duarte. The level of play from the first set dropped off as both teams made many unforced errors. At the end of the set it again got exciting with Puerto Rico eventually winning, 28-26.
The teams started off the third set fairly evenly. Puerto Rico continued to play slightly more aggressively at the net and service line, causing Dominican Republic to call a time out trailing by a score of 12-8. Puerto Rico held their lead going into the second technical time out with a score of 16-11. The Dominican Republic tried to make a come back, but it was not enough. Puerto Rico won the third set by a score of 25-22.
