Argentine panthers defeat Kenyan tigers
Argentina booked its first victory of the 2002 Women's World Championship, when the Argentine panthers defeated Kenya here in Riesa, Germany. The team of head coach Claudio Cuello won the preliminary pool C clash in straight sets in front of 3,100 spectators.
Both teams started the first set highly motivated and both scored points through nice attacks. The words the Argentine coach Cuello spoke to his players in the first technical time-out had a positive effect on his team. Immediately Argentina took a 12-5 kead.. The precise outside attacks of Argentina as well as a solid blocking caused Kenya a lot of headaches. Argentina then further expanded its lead and clearly won the set 25-14.
Similar to the first set Argentina took off quite early (6-3) in the second one. Again and again Kenya had to fight against the powerful attacks and blockings of Argentina. At 5-11 Kenya's head coach Ohanya called a time-out since his team clearly lacked focus. Kenya still had problems with the precise attacks of the opponent. Towards the end of the second set Kenya caught up (20-21) but Argentina eventually took the set.
Both teams started the third set quite nervously. At the first technical time-out Argentina only had a 8-6 lead. In the middle of the third set Kenya's block improved considerably so that they took the lead at 15-13. Argentina lost its focus and made a lot of attack mistakes. However, Argentina then improved again at the end of the set and took the 3-0 victory
Argentine captain Carolina Costagrande was the best scorer of her team with 14 points. It was even Kenyan Violet Barasa who was the main scorer of the match with 17 points. One other nice performance was the five kill this player from Kenya scored.
