Impressive Italy booked second straight sets victory
Italy booked a second straight sets victory in Pool A of the Women's World Championship. After defeating Japan on Friday, the "Squadra Azzurra" was much better than Mexico here in Muenster, Germany.
The Italian favorites started the match slowly and were even down to Mexico at the beginning of the first set. But then the Europeans showed their attacking power. In spite of the Mexicans showing a spirited performance, Italy gained the lead and went on to win the set 25-17.
The second set was very similar to the first one. Only after a 7-7 draw Italy got into gear and into a 16-9 lead. The Mexicans did not play as good as at the beginning and didn't have a chance against the powerfully playing Italians, who won the set 25-13.
The Italians continued to dominate in the third set with their hard attacks against the Mexican block. Much to the joy of the crowd here in Muenster the Mexicans never gave up and took every opportunity to make a point. But the favorites of Pool A won without any problems and the third set as well as the match with their second match point 25-20 after one hour.
Italy is the leader of Pool A now with a 2-0 win/loose record. The formation of head coach Marco Motta didn't loose a set yet and can claim a place in the second round by defeating Czech Republic on Sunday.
Mexican Bibiana Candelas was the best scorer of the match (15 points) Opposite attacker Elisa Togut and Anna Vania Mello were with 11 points the best scorers on the Italian side.
