Italy flies over Japan in opening match
Italy won the first match of the 2002 Women's World Volleyball Championship defeating Japan 3-0. Although the Japanese players fought for every point. Italy dominated the match, especially in the the first set.

Germany defeats Czech Republic after a five sets thriller
In a nerve-wrecking game the German team won their opening match against the Czech Republic in Muenster. Though the German players seemed nervous, they decided the third set in their favour after a 1-1 draw by sets. In the fourth set the Czechs were in the lead for a long time, but Germany fought back, had a match point but lost in the end. The hosts then won the match in the tie-break fifth set.

Bulgaria walks over Mexico in straight sets
Bulgaria won the third match of Pool A against Mexico on the opening day of the World Championship in Muenster. Bulgaria exploited their height-advantage fully and gave the Central Americans no room to play. On Saturday Bulgaria will meet the Czech Republic while Mexico plays Italy.

Surprisingly clear victory for Bulgaria over Czech Republic
Bulgaria defeated the Czech Republic surprisingly in three straight sets. After initial problems the Bulgarians improved clearly, although the second set was very tight. The Bulgarians dominated the game throughout the third set and didn't give the Czechs any chance. Bulgaria thus achieved their second victory of the event.

Japan's first victory
Japan had to wait for a victory until their third match at the World Championship, when they defeated Mexico 3-0 in Muenster. The Asians dominated their opponents in the attack and deservedly won the clash with a courageously fighting Mexican team that never gave up.

First defeat for home crowd favorite Germany
In a tight and dramatic game, Women's World Champion host Germany suffered its first defeat after Bulgaria beat the Germans in straight sets. In the first two sets, the Germans were down most of the time but came back with the roaring support of the 5,300 spectators at Halle Muensterland, but failed to make the big points. Bulgaria was even not impressed by a German four-point lead (17-13) in the third set, closed the gap and ultimately won the set. Bulgaria thus remains undefeated in the World Championship, while Germany suffered its first defeat.

Third 3-0 victory in a row for impressive Italy
Experienced Italy overpowered the Czech Republic 3-0 in their third World Championship match. This was already the third straight sets victorythe team of head coach Marco Bonitta booked in preliminary pool A. The Czech team could only counter the hard Italian attacks at a few stages. In the decisive moments, the southern Europeans played highly concentrated and were never in danger.

In a varied game, Japan upset Bulgaria 3-1. The Bulgarians suffering their first defeat in this World Championship. Bulgaria dominated the first set winning 25-16, but then Japan mobilised all their strength and decided the following two sets in their favour. In their last first-round matches Bulgaria will play Italy on Tuesday and Japan faces the Czech Republic.

Czech Republic takes first victory
Czech Republic grabbed its first victory at this World Championship be defeating Mexico 3-2 after a long, hard fight. The enthusiastic capacity crowd of 5,200 at Halle Muensterland saw a great fight by both teams. In the first two sets the Czechs failed to exploit their advantage to win the sets, but triumphed in the following sets forcing the match into the fifth set tiebreaker which they also won.

Italy put Germany in trouble after fourth 3-0 victory
Italy was forced to fight for their victory over Germany in straight sets. The Italians dominated the game in the first set, but then the crowds whipped the host team on to achieve a 21-21 after being 16-10 down. The 5,660 spectators followed the dramatic second set standing: Germany conceded two set points, Italy needed no fewer than five set points to finally win the set 31-29. The third set was as exciting as the second, but Italy was the better team at the end and won the match 3-0.

Japan spoils chance to reach next round
Japan missed the perfect opportunity to clinch a place in the second round of the Women's World Championship. The Czech Republic won their last first round match defeating Japan 3-1 cheered on by more than 4,000 spectators at Halle Muensterland. The surprising Czech victory kept Germany's chances open to still reach the second round.

Italy takes pool victory after easy win over Bulgaria
Italy defeated Bulgaria in straight sets and took the Pool A victory. The performance of the teams showed clearly that both teams had already qualified for the second round. After the first set, Italy was definitely number one and Bulgaria number two in this group. That was the sign for both coaches to give their first six some rest. Italy ontinued to dominate and was never in danger in the match.
