Italy is the new Women's World Champion. In the final, the Italians defeated USA 3-2. It was the first ever World Title for a Western European women's team. After losing the first and the fourth set, the Squadra Azzurra took the World Crown by winning the fifth set thriller. It is the first ever major title for Italy.

Cuba takes fifth place after win over Korea
Three times World and Olympic Champion Cuba grabbed the fifth place at the 2002 Women's World Championship. The Cuban team, the winner in both 1994 and 1998, won the classification match for the fifth spot against Korea. In a packed Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, Cuba took a 3-2 victory over the Asians.
