Greece in waiting room after winning against China
Greece defeated China in the second round Pool K match of the 2002 Men's World Championship. The Greek team has two victories now, but is not sure of a place in the quarterfinal. The Greek team has to wait for the result of the match between Yugoslavia versus USA: If the US team wins, Greece is eliminated. If Yugoslavia takes the victory, Greece will proceed to the Elite Eight.
China took advantage of the bad start of the Greek team in the first set. Greece seemed stressed and made some mistakes China took the first set in the match that Greece had to win in order to have a chance reaching the quartefinals. The Chinese players Liang Zheng (six points) and Qiong Shen (five points) were the best scorers in this set..
After losing the first set the Greek team woke up and improved their way of playing. It was no problem for the Greeks anymore to win the match. Greece sailed to the 3-1 victory and has to hope that Yugoslavia will beat USA.
The best scorers of the match were the Greeks Tontor Baev with 15 points and Marios Gkiourdas with 14 points. "We played better but we are tired after the game against USA. It was a good victory but now we are waiting for the match Yugoslavia-USA," Baev said.
