Japan jumps over Kazakhstan
Japan won its first match of the 2002 Men's World Championship, defeating Kazakhstan 3-1 in the Pool D clash. It looked like Japan took a 3-0 victiory, but the former Soviet State fought back and clinched the third set. Japan secured the victory winning the fourth set easily.
The match had an exciting start. Both teams fought every point as if they were playing the last game of the Championship. But Kazakhstan, after a long fight for point 15, was leading at the second technical time out 16-14. Finally Japan won the set, because of the digging more balls and the attacks of Kawaura Hiroaki.
During the second set, Japan was leading continously. The reception of the Asians was excellent. Hosokawa Nobuyoshi and Yamamoto Takahiro, with 6 points each,in this stage, marked the difference between the two teams. Japan clinched the set and was underway to the victory..
In the third set, Japan wasthe leader until the second technical time out at 16-12. Kazakhstan focused again on the rhythm of the game and, after an exciting end of the set, won the third set with 31-29.
Kazakhstan wasted the advantage of the previous set. Japan immediately took the lead and clinched the first important victory of the event winning the set 25-10,
Nobuyoshi Hosokawa was the best scorer with 19 points.
