China collected its first victory in its final match of the opening round, defeating Australia in a match which the Asian side dominated thanks to collective play. As third place finishers of Group A, the Chinese must now wait for the results of the other matches to see if they qualify for the following round.

A decisive performance by Marcos Milinkovic lifted Argentina to a hard-fought victory over Portugal in front of a frenzied 9,000-strong crowd, locking up the host team's place in the second round as the winners of Group A.

After losing the first two matches in the 2002 Men's World Championship, Russia was able to defeat Tunisia in the last Pool C match played at the Luna Park Stadium in Buenos Aires. Thanks to this straight sets victory, the Russian Rockets are qualified for the next round as one of the best third-ranked teams of the event.

Olympic Champion Yugoslavia booked an expected win over Japan to finish with an 3-0 win/lose record in Pool D of the Men's World Championship. The runner-up of the 1998 event cleared the first position in this group, while Japan has to wait what will happen in the other groups to see if the Asian team will proceed or not.

The Netherlands defeated Cuba 3 - 1 in their final Pool F match in Salta for a clean sweep of their preliminary matches and an easy ticket into the second round. The team now moves to Santa fe for the second round for the start of Pool J on Friday. Cuba must wait for the results of other matches to see if they scrape through into round two.

Czech Republic finally takes victory
Czech Republic won its first match of the 2002 Men's World Championship by defeating Greece in five set in Pool F of the 24 teams event. Greece can be happy winning two sets, because the Greek team is qualified for the next round as the number two of this group. Czech Republic finished third and has to wait for the results of the other groups. The Czech victory hurt Cuba, because the 1998 bronze medallist is out of the event.
