Poland surprised Italy
Poland continues its way to the second round of the Volleyball World Championship Argentina 2002. It pulled off a solid victory over the national team of Italy by 3-2 (20-25, 24-26, 26-24, 25-21 and 15-10) at the Angel P. Malvicino Stadium in the city of Santa Fe.
The first set was even; both teams traded points. Fei with 45% in attack made evident the absence of Sartoretti. In spite of this, Italy started to press from the service and exploit all the net (Giani 7, Fei 6, Mastrangelo 4 points). Poland made mistakes in crucial moments and let the set go.
In the second set, Poland was more aggresive in attack and in the service, supported by the performance of Gruszka (7 points). The "azzurri" answered back with the good contributions of Giani and Fei, who showed 80% of efficiency in attack this time, finally closing the set by the slightest difference but without problems.
The third set continued to be levelled. Murak scored 6 points for Poland who decided to substitute the setter. Italy changed players too, but it was not enough for them to avoid losing; the Polish won with attitude.
In the fourth set the Polish team profited from the thrilling performance in the previous one. It took a sprint in the score by its regular spikes (68% of efficiency) and also by the Italian errors. Anastasi's players sent Sartoretti and Di Giorgi to court, but this was not the solution and the white team sealed the set in 22 minutes.
In a thrilling tie-break both teams fought hard. Poland started with three blocks which enabled them to play more comfortably. Gruzska ended up a great night as best scorer with 21 points.
Wspanialy's players performed wonderfully and this places them as leaders of pool B.
Gruzska, said: "We are happy for this victory, but anything can happen in the second round".
