Men's World Championship 2002 - Press Info

Press Conference

U.S.A. beat Brazil 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 25-27, 33-31, 15-12) - duration 2:15
30-Sep, start time: 15:10, end time: 17:25 - Attendance: 6,900
Giba (Brazilian captain): "We performed well until the end. The teams weren't quite steady throughout the match. We made many serve mistakes and we didn't have a good block."
Lloy Ball ( USA's Captain) : " Our team played quite well, unlike yesterday. I'm very proud of my team because even though its a team cponformed by young players, we played with our heart and we knew how to overcome difficult situations throughout the match. This match was quite useful to gain confidence and to convince ourselves that we can meet any other team. "
Press: "Which was the key to win the match and which aspects do you think you have to improve for the following matches?"
Lloy Ball ( USA's Captain) : " What really worked for us today was the counter attack. Besides, our attackers were very smart when choosing how to attack. As regards the things we have to improve, we have to improve everything. That's what we train for day after day, to show a higher level of play in every match."
Press: " How did you feel about spectators whisteling while your National Anthem was being played?"
Lloy Ball ( USA's Captain) : " I didn't listen to them. We have the best country in the world and I don't care about what people think. Anyway, I hope people can separate political matters from a volleybal match. My team and I worked really hard to be here. That's all. "
Bernardo Rezende (Brazil, Coach): " It was a very tough match. We knew the rival we were meeting and that we had to be very careful. Our service didn't work and we didn't have a good day with our block. I hope this defeat help us improve all the negative aspects of our game."
Beal Douglas (USA, Coach): " We played a great match against Brazil today, but it is too early to speak about certain issues or to think that we are ready to reach the top. Tomorrow our objective is play better than we did today. I hope that the team can keep that mentality and of course, that it can improve".
What were the positive things about today?
Beal Douglas (USA, Coach): "The experience. Having played all sets at a very high and regular level".
During yesterday's press conference you said that the most important thing to improve was the service. However, that did not happen. Do you attribute that to a technical or psychological factor?
Bernardo Rezende (Brazil, Coach): "To both of them. We can not train much to improve the tactical aspects, no do not have much time. But it is fundamental that we improve as our team is not that high and depend a lot on the service to press and attempt to reach the blocking in a good situation."
