Puerto Rico and Costa Rica to meet for spot in Italy

Costa Rica advanced to the match for gthe ticket to Italy against Puerto Rico following the one-sided victory over St Lucia on Saturday

Ponce, Puerto Rico, May 25, 2014 – Hosts Puerto Rico and Costa Rica are set to duel on Sunday for the spot in the FIVB Women’s World Championship in Italy available at the NORCECA Pool R Qualification Tournament.

Puerto Rico breezed past Barbados in straight sets (25-4, 25-8, 25-8) to conclude the preliminary phase of the tournament with an undefeated 3-0 record while Costa Rica (2-1) roared past St Lucia to capture a straight-set victory 25-18, 25-12, 25-14 on Saturday.

The home team had the best part in the previous match between them winning 25-20, 25-14, 25-20 on Thursday.

For the second night in a row the Puerto Rican squad dominated their rivals in attacks (36-9) and in serving aces (14-0) in a match practically without opposition.

Vanessa Velez had 15 points to lead the winners while Alexandra Oquendo and Aury Cruz added 6 and 5 points, respectively. Julia Lewis had four points for the defeated side.

“We have been able to play our game and the serves have been effective,” Puerto Rico’s coach Jose Mieles said. “All the three setters have done the job and the middle blockers too.”

Costa Tica held a commanding margin of 11-4 in serving aces and also had the advantage in blocks (7-5) and attacks (31-19).

Veteran Angela Willis finished with 17 points, including four blocks and three aces, and Paola Ramirez added seven points, in the victory. All Costa Rican players, excepting the liberos, scored at least one point.

“We need to play every game at the same level for us to be effective,” Costa Rica’s coach Horacio Bastit said.
