Puerto Rico and Costa Rica score crushing victories

Costa Rican Verania Willis (attacking) led her team in the victory over Barbados on Friday at Juan "Pachín" Vicens Auditorium in Ponce

Ponce, Puerto Rico, May 24, 2014 – Hosts Puerto Rico and Costa Rica scored crushing victories over St Lucia and Barbados in the second day of the NORCECA Women’s World Championship Pool R Qualification Tournament on Friday.

Puerto Rico needed less than 60 minutes to score their second victory by brushing aside St Lucia 25-4, 25-9, 25-10 while Costa Rica powered past Barbados 25-11, 25-9, 25-18.

The victory earned Puerto Rico a spot in the decisive match for the berth in the final stage of the world championship in Italy.

Vanessa Velez led the home side for second day in a row with 17 points while Lynda Morales and Sheila Ocasio contributed 8 and 7 points, respectively.

“The game allowed me to give playing opportunities to the new generation of players and to work with the three setters in our squad,” Puerto Rico’s coach José Mieles said. “It was a good result but we still need to improve in some details.”

Verania Willis and Paola Ramirez led the Costa Rican team with 14 and 13 points, respectively, while Angela Willis added nine, in the victory. Thonya Joseph was the best for Barbados with seven points.

The Central American champions outscored St Lucia in attacks 39-11 and had a huge 14-3 margin in serving aces.

“We had a better game than yesterday but we still need to reduce the number of errors,” Argentinean coach of Costa Rica Horacio Bastit said. “We have another day to make the adjustments before the final match.”

“It was difficult to execute because their serves hurt us,” Barbados’ coach Andrew Brathwaite said. “As a positive note, our blocking was better.”
