Costa Rica’s coach ready to battle in Women’s Pool R

Ponce, Puerto Rico, May 23, 2014 – Costa Rica’s coach Horacio Bastit is aware of the home court advantage factor and the quality of the Puerto Rican side his squad will be facing at the NORCECA Pool R Qualifier towards the FIVB Women’s World Championship in Italy, but he is not ready to quit before putting a good fight.

“We know that our toughest rival here will be Puerto Rico, a world-class team,” Bastit said at during a press conference held on Wednesday night on the eve of the start of the four-team tournament. “But we have worked hard for this competition and we will be out trying to qualify to the world championship.”

On the other hand, Puerto Rico’s coach José Mieles took a more cautious stance even though the home side is considered the favorite to book the spot in Italy.

“We are going to play hard every single day without underestimating the opponents,” Mieles said. “The obvious goal is to get the ticket to Italy.”

Florian Combie of St Lucia arrived here with realistic expectations of battling for a second place finish.

“We want to take advantage of the opportunity to get experience,” Combie said. “But we will do our best to finish second and qualify to the final playoff against the other runners-up.”

Andrew Brathwaite of Barbados said the third-round competition is something new for his young side.

“We are glad to compete here against teams of higher level,” Brathwaite said. “This is a new experience for my players.”

The Pool R winner earns a berth into the 24-team FIVB Women’s World Championship that will be held from September 23 to October 12 in six Italian cities.

The second-place team in Pool R, along with the other four second place teams in third-round pools, will compete in a final playoff from June 2-9 at Trinidad & Tobago to determine NORCECA’s sixth and final spot into the World Championship.
