La Romana to host Women’s Group P Qualifier

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, May 7, 2014 – The FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship Qualification Tournament NORCECA Group P will take place in La Romana, in the eastern of the Dominican Republic from May 15-18.

Teams from El Salvador, Guadeloupe, Nicaragua and hosts Dominican Republic will compete under a round-robin format before the first and second placed teams compete for the ticket to Italy.

The announcement was made on Wednesday during a press conference held at the FIVB/NORCECA Regional Development Center in Santo Domingo.

The Dominican Republic’s women team, currently ranked No. 8 by the FIVB and No. 2 in NORCECA, is considered a heavy favorite for the gold medal. The second ranked team from the tournament and from four other NORCECA third round competitions will get a chance to win the ticket to Italy in a final playoff to take place in Trinidad and Tobago from June 2-9.

Nicaragua is ranked No. 10 in NORCECA, El Salvador is in the 17th position while Guadeloupe in the 32nd place.
The Dominican Republic is one of the five seeded NORCECA teams in the final phase of the continental qualification process that began in 2012. The others are United States, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Canada.

Nicaragua won Pool H at home in 2012 with a 25-15, 22-25, 25-17, 23-25, 15-11 victory over Guatemala. In 2013 they went to Jamaica to defeat the local team 21-25, 25-14, 22-25, 23-25, 15-10 to win Pool M.

El Salvador finished second in Pool G in 2012 losing to hosts Guatemala 25-18, 25-15, 25-11 but bounced back in 2013 to prevail against U.S. Virgin Islands 21-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-18, 15-9 in a tournament played in St. Croix.

Guadeloupe was second in Pool A subdued by hosts Trinidad and Tobago in 2012 and last year also finished second to Guatemala 25-20, 24-26, 25-18, 25-21.

During the press conference it was announced the team that will represent the Dominican Republic which consists of setters Niverka Marte and Rosalyn Ángeles, middle blockers Candida Arias and Marianne Fersola, opposite players Gina Mambru and Yonkaira Peña, outside hitters Bethania De la Cruz, Brayelin Martínez, Yinery Martínez, Erasma Moreno and Ana Yorkira Binet and libero Brenda Castillo.

FIVB First Executive Vice President and NORCECA President Cristobal Marte Hoffiz attended the event accompanied by the governor of La Romana Juan José Santana, Congressmen Teodoro Ursino Reyes and Omar de Marchena and Dominican Republic Volleyball Federation President Ramón García.
