Serbia ready for FIVB Women’s World Championship qualfiers

Serbia won the bronze medal at the 2013 FIVB World Grand Prix

Baku, Azerbaijan, November 22, 2013 – Serbia’s senior women’s team will vie for their third appearance at the FIVB Women’s World Championships, by participating in the third round of European qualifiers (Pool J) next month, along with Israel and Estonia. The qualifications will be held in the City of Baku from January 3 to 5.  

Serbia – the bronze medalists of the 2013 FIVB World Grand Prix – first appeared in the FIVB World Championships in 1978, by the name of Yugoslavia. Twenty-eight years later, by the name of Serbia and Montenegro, the team won the bronze medal at the at the 2006 World Championships in Japan.

At the 2010 World Championship in Japan, the “Blue Ladies” finished eighth. Serbia (Yugoslavia, Serbia and Montenegro) at the World Championships played 31 matches so far, achieving 19 victories and 12 defeats, with the set difference of 65:46, which is 61.3% success rate.

In the qualifying process for the 2006 World Championship, Serbia and Montenegro played a total of 10 matches through all three preliminary rounds, scoring 8 victories and 2 defeats, with the set ratio of 27:9.

At the World Championships in Osaka and Nagoya, the team played 11 matches, and recorded 9 wins and 2 defeats, with the set difference of 30:12.

Serbian reached their first medal at the World Championships having played a total of 21 matches, including qualifiers, with the record of 17 victories, 4 defeats, and the set difference of 57:21 (80.95% of victories). In 2010 World Championship 3rd round qualifier, the senior women of Serbia won the first place in their pool, overpowering Spain, Romania and Croatia in the Serbian City of Subotica.

At the World Championship in Tokyo, the “Blue Ladies” have played 11 matches, scoring 6 wins and 5 losses, with the set difference of 20:18 to finish eighth in the end. The 2014 World Championship will be played from September 23 to October 12 in Italy.

This year, Serbia’s players received five individual awards. At the 2’13 FIVB World Grand Prix, Jovana Brako?evi? was named the best opposite, Milena Raši? was the best blocker, and Brankica Mihajlovi? was awarded best receiver of the FIVB World Grand Prix. At the 2013 European Championship, Jovana Brako?evi? and Suzana ?ebi? were awarded as the best spiker and the best receiver, respectively.

Serbia also finished fourth at the 2013 European Championship, and fifth in the 2013 European league. In 2013, Serbia played 32 matches, and recorded 19 victories and 13 defeats, with the set difference of 70:49 (59.37% victories).

A total of 24 teams will compete in women's World Championship taking place in Italy in 2014. The host country being automatically qualified for the quadriennal event, this leaves 23 vacancies open for other countries of the world.

Qualifying tournaments are held within the five FIVB Confederations (AVC, CAVB, CEV, CSV and NORCECA) to determine the 23 participants who will join Italy. A total of 141 national federations have registered for the men's qualification ((up from 101 in 2010) .

The qualification process started in May 2012 and will run until June 2014.
