Botswana capture gold at Zone 6 Women's World C'ship qualifier


Mozambique's players celebrate after reaching the finals of the World Championship qualifiers

  Lusaka, Zambia, October 26, 2013 – Botswana claimed the gold medal in the 2014 FIVB Women's World Championship Zone 6 Qualification Tournament (Pool R) after they overcame a fighting Mozambique 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-8) on the fifth and last day in Lusaka on Saturday.

With the win, Botswana finished the six-nation tournament with a perfect 5-0 record without dropping a set. The victory also secured their berth in the final qualification round where they will be joined by Mozambique despite their first defeat after four consecutive victories. Mozambique finished the competition in second place with a win-loss ratio of 4-1 for 10 points.

Namibia flew past hosts Zambia 3-1 (25-20, 25-22, 25-26, 25-22) on the final day’s most exciting match to finish in third position with a 3-2 record for eight points. Zambia finished in fifth position with 1-4 record and four points.

Zimbabwe finished the tournament with their best performance after they demolished winless Swaziland 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-11) to claim fourth place with eight points while the losers finished at the bottom of the table with an 0-5 record.

Botswana will be grouped in Pool 1 in the final qualification tournament to be held in Algeria in January 2014, while Mozambique will join hosts Kenya in Pool 2.
