Kenya top Zone 5, Uganda shock Egypt in World Champs Qualifier

Uganda team shocked Egypt in Zone 5 World Championship Qualifier in Kampala

Kampala, Uganda, October 19, 2013 - Uganda and Egypt will join Kenya in the final qualification Pools of the FIVB World Championship at the end of the zone 5 Pool Q qualifiers.

The teams move on after Kenya defeated Tanzania 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-11), and Uganda pulled off historical 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-19) against Egypt at the MTN Arena in Lugogo on Saturday.

By the end of the four nation round-robin tournament, Kenya topped the zonal qualifier with a perfect 3-0, followed by Uganda with win/loss ratio of 2-1. Egypt followed in third place, with 1-2 score ahead of Tanzania who came fourth (0-3).

Kenya already qualified to the finals as one of the top two African countries in the FIVB World Ranking, along with Algeria. Uganda also qualify as winner of Zone 5 and Egypt as runner up.

According to the drawing of lots earlier this month, Uganda will be drawn in Pool 2 of the finals, while Egypt will be drawn in Pool 1

Kenya v Tanzania 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-11)

Kenya's coach David Lung’aho decided to rest some of his stars, as Monica Biama Gaudecia Makokha, Violet makuto, Ruth Jepngetich Diana Khisa and Janat Wanja took the court in their final group Q game.

Tanzania, who have been a tournament revelation despite not winning a game, managed to score beyond 10 points - going down 25-11, 25-17 and 25-11 in all the three sets.

Kenya, who have qualified as the top seeds from their seed, now look to the final qualification berth as Tanzanian go back to embark on a journey that will promote and make the sport popular among locals.

“It has been a good outing for us,” Lung’aho said.

“I can say my team has been determined throughout the games we played and l can’t ask too much from, they did their best,” said Paul Bitok.

Uganda v Egypt 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-19)

Uganda pulled off the biggest win in the country’s 43-year volleyball Heritage, with a match that sent the MTN Arena Lugogo into wild cheers.

Egypt entered the match with a number of injured players, but that didn’t stop Uganda from walking the talk as they pulled off spectacular attacks.

As Egypt struggled on service, Uganda's setter Eunice Nuwabigaba carried her team.

Irene Adeke also tested Egypt’s attack with her blocks, as liberos Shila Omuriwe and Flavia Nandawula provided good cover.

“It’s too much, we worked so hard for this and finally prayers have been answered,” captain Prossy Alobo said.

A tearful Egypt team looked on in disbelief, as coach Hesham Badrawy declined comment citing vocal problems.
