Colombia to face Argentina in final South America Women's World Champ qualifier

Montaño was the great star for Colombia

San Juan, Argentina, October 18, 2013 - With an outstanding tie-break match, the FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship Italy 2014 South America qualification tournament began on Friday in San Juan's Aldo Cantoni stadium with Colombia defeating Peru 3-2 (19-25, 25-17, 15-25, 25-20, 15-13).

The first set began with a point-by-point battle with Angela Leyla for Peru and Madelayne Montaño in Colombia showing their utmost skills. Peru got the lead 9-6, but Colombia fought from behind to prevent the red and white team's lead (16-14) until nearly the end. A score of 20-15 finished 25-19 with Peru winning the first set.

Colombia were off to a better start in the second set, with an ace by captain Ampudia, but Peru evened the score 7-7 to keep fighting point-by-point until Colombia arrived to the second TTO 16-13 with powerful blocks. Columbia got a wider lead to finish, winning by eight points and tying the match 1-1.

In the third set, Peru recovered its concentration and got a good distance 15-10 with Colombia unable to defend. Mirtha Uribe closed the set to put the series 2-1 with an important difference 25-15. Peru maintained the leadership at the start of the fourth set, but Colombia forced a tie-breaker. Peru had the chance to close it when they were leading 21-20 but Colombia got control and with Montaño added to win the set.

The parity showed up once more on the fifth set, with Montaño putting the weight of Colombia's team on her shoulders. The end was very exciting, with great performance on both sides and Peru shinning with Leyva to reach equal 13-13. Colombia could not be stopped and finished celebrating by the minimum difference 15-13.
