Korea and Kazakhstan women take straight-set wins on Day 3 of Asian qualification tournament

Korea celebrate in their match against India

Chenzhou, China, September 29, 2013 – Korea and Kazakhstan both gained their second wins after sweeping India and New Zealand, respectively, on the third day of competition at the 2014 FIVB Volleyball World Championship Asian qualification tournament.

Korea endured a fighting Indian side in straight sets

Korea shifted to high gear after breaking loose from a rather faulty start in the first set 8-5. Despite the Indians’ relentless effort for a come back, the Koreans kept their momentum and secured the first set victory 25-15.

India snapped a 16-9 Korean lead by instigating a 9-3 run to trail Korea by a single marker 19-18 in the second set. Korea finally extinguished the blistering exertions of the Indian attackers and capped the second set 25-19.

The Indian team was unyielding in their challenge and trailed Korea by a slim margin in the third set. Korea finally seeped through the tight battle and utilised its speedy plays to seal the third set and match victory 25-18.

“Even though we won the match, we still had many problems,” Korea coach Cha Haewon said. “I am not satisfied with my players’ performance. I hope we can improve (our game) immediately for our next match.”

Kazakhstan dominate New Zealand 3-0

Central Asian team Kazakhstan gained a straight sets victory over winless New Zealand (25-12, 25-14, 25-10). The Kazakh squad is off to a good start taking their second victory in the competition after stunning favourites Korea 3-1 last Friday.

Kazakhstan cruised to a 25-12 victory in the initial set, as New Zealand could not change the tempo of the match.

A sudden shift in momentum came through at the start of the second set as New Zealand took a 5-1 lead. A quick timeout solved the Kazakh woes as they scored successively on excellent counter-attacking and blocking that tied the set at 6-all. Kazakhstan limited New Zealand’s offense and took a 25-14 win in their favour.

Kazakhstan showed optimum performance and took advantage of the vulnerability of New Zealand to cap a 25-10 win in the third set.

Kazakhstan will play a crucial match in the competition against hosts China on Monday. Korea will be on break on Monday and will face a tough Chinese side on Tuesday.

Gripping battles await China, Kazakhstan and Korea in the remaining matches as these three teams position them in the race to determine who will take the final two berths for Asia in the World Championship.
