San Juan to host South America Women's World Champs qualifiers

Although the Aldo Cantoni stadium has been the site of preliminary rounds of the FIVB World League in different seasons, this is the first time that it will host a high level women’s international volleyball event

Buenos Aires, Argentina, September 3, 2013 - The Argentine Volleyball Federation (FeVA) has announced that the city of San Juan will host the South America qualification tournament, due to take place from October 18 to 20 for the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship Italy 2014.

The five-team tournament, which will follow the Continental Championship (which offers one World Championship ticket) due to take place from September 16 to 22 in Peru, will offer one ticket to next year’s World Championship.

Although the Aldo Cantoni stadium has been the site of preliminary rounds of the FIVB World League in different seasons, this is the first time that it will host a high level women’s international volleyball event.

The Argentine team last qualified for the FIVB Women’s World Championship in Germany in 2002. This FIVB premier event is held every four years.

The FIVB Volleyball World Championship Italy 2014 will feature 24 teams divided into four pools of six teams for the first round, which starts on September 23, 2014 with hosts Italy placed in Pool A followed by the 11 best world-ranked teams placed in the first, second and third rows starting from Pool B using the serpentine system. The 12 remaining teams will be divided into three groups on the basis of the FIVB world ranking and placed in the fourth, fifth and sixth rows according to a drawing of lots.

The FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2014 represents the first time Italy has hosted the women’s edition of the World Championships having already hosted the men in 2010 and 1978. Russia are the two-time defending champions after Italy won the title in 2002.
