World champions acclaimed in Poland

Stéphane Antiga speaks to his players during the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship Poland 2014

Warsaw, Poland, January 14, 2015 - Poland’s men’s volleyball team and head coach Stéphane Antiga were rewarded for their performances at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship Poland 2014 at a ceremony held at the Polish Olympic Committee’s Olympic Centre on Monday.

The awards ceremony, which focused on the country’s best athletes in 2014, highlighted Poland’s successful run at the record-breaking World Championship. A full house cheered on the Polish team as they defeated defending champions Brazil in the final at the Spodek Arena in Katowice. Victory in the 103rd and final match of the competition also saw former French volleyball star Stéphane Antiga claim the World Championship title in his first job as coach.

After the final, Antiga said: “This is an incredible story. But the success is primarily down to my players, who have been incredible these three weeks.”

The Polish Olympic Committee awards ceremony turned the spotlight on standout performances in what was a remarkable year for Polish sport, also featuring strong performances at the Sochi Olympic Games. Other laureates included Zbigniew Bródka (speed skating), Justyna Kowalczyk (cross country skiing), Kamil Stoch (ski jumping) and Michal Kwiatkowski (road cycling).
