Costa Rica and Canada off to good start in men’s Pool Q

Costa Rican Richard Smith Hall contributed 26 points in the victory over Trinidad and Tobago on Friday

Mississuga, Canada, May 16, 2014 - In the opening game of the third round, Pool Q, of the NORCECA Men’s World Championship Qualification, a more experienced Trinidad and Tobago fell to Costa Rica in five sets 3-2 (17-25, 25-23, 25-20, 18-25, 15-13).

Earning 26 points for Costa Rica, Richard Smith Hall looked solid on the court today, and credited his team with for their support throughout the match. 

It was Simon Blake who led Trinidad in scoring with 19, in a game that lasted just over two hours at the Hershey Centre near Toronto, Ontario.   He was followed by Ryan Stewart who had 16, and Marc Honore with 15.

“The game was a difficult game,” the Costa Rican Smith Hall said.  “The whole team played well tonight. We are not just a team, we are a family.”  

In the other match of the day in Pool Q, Canada beat Panama in three sets 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-18).

Panama gave it a valiant effort, but couldn’t hold off the larger, more experienced Canadian team. 

Canada opposite Gavin Schmitt led his team with 18 points, and 14 spikes.   Ruben Cuero managed nine points, as Panama’s top scorer. 

“It’s going to take a while,” Canada’s Coach Glenn Hoag said. “It’s our first match together in a while. We need to work this out.”
