Berlin, Germany, December 3, 2013 – Germany’s coach Vital Heynan has called up the 15 players who will be taking part in the World Championship qualifiers in January.
The team’s training for the World Championship qualifier will start on December 20 in Heidelberg, with the qualifying tournament scheduled to take place from January 3 to 5, 2014 at the MHP Arena in Ludwigsburg. In preparation for the World Championship qualifiers, the German team will play two matches in Belgium against the hosts.
Come January, Germany will play Croatia, Estonia and Turkey for a ticket to the FIVB Men’s World Championship that will take place in Poland in September 3-21, 2014.
The team taking part in January’s qualifier will include a line-up of familiar faces who Heynen has relied on during the 2013 season. Of the twelve players from the 2013 squad only external attacker Tom Straw Bach and setter Simon Tischer are not included.
Heynan has also appointed Sebastian Kuehner to work alongside Luke Kampa as second setter. Although Kuhner has been part of the national team he has not played an international match so far.
Middle blocker Michael Andrei was the star appointment on the team. The German-Romanian, who has played extensively with the Bundesliga, is now making waves in the French League. The 2.10 meter tall giant is number three in the block statistics (33 block points in 10 games) and number 17 on the best players list.
"I was very happy when
the coach told me the good news,” said Andrei. “I feel very honored, and I am
pleased that my work over the past few years has finally borne fruit. I still
can’t believe this opportunity has come to me. It is a big challenge which I am
excited to take on. My goal is to develop myself, to integrate well and to give
my all to the national team."
The squad comprises the usual mix of young players and experienced professionals, which now includes six Bundesliga players and the nine who compete with foreign teams. The World Championship ticket is a common goal driving every member of the team.
After their sixth place at the
European Championship 2013, the German team is hoping for a good performance at
the World Championship qualifiers in January.
